When an old account calls someone a “village doctor,” can we read that label as the equivalent of a medical occupation today? We need to consider both the work described and the person who chose the name. I began re-reading the expression in missionary J. Robert Moose’s 1911 account of Korea.
My question concerns the kinds of medical labour gathered under that label. Rather than taking the name as a ready-made description of an occupation, I examined the narrative that used it alongside the work being described, bringing the argument and its source list into a manuscript.

Source criticism here is more than deciding whether an old account is right or wrong. It means distinguishing what the writer says he observed, how he describes it, and how far other evidence can support a comparison. “Medical labour” directs attention to the work represented in the account, not just to an occupational title.
I kept the evidential reach of different sources separate. A rule permitting or requiring an activity does not by itself establish that it occurred in a particular place. Comparing one account with another source can sharpen the question without settling the practices of an entire region.
I critically examined the sources, reconsidered the occupational category, and connected the manuscript’s argument to the materials supporting it. The specific passages and interpretive findings remain for a fuller account once the permitted scope of quotation is clear.

The question I keep returning to is the relationship between the name given to a person and the work that person performed. Reading “village doctor” means attending not only to its translation, but also to the narrative in which that name was made.
