PROJECT RECORD

The Panax search stopped at the final sequence gate

HARD PROBLEMS · 2026 · TECHNICAL NO-GO · NO DISCOVERY CLAIM

This search ended in a technical NO-GO, not a new-virus result. Some mapping and de novo stages passed internal checks while screening public Panax transcriptome data for virus-like signals. The final sequence gate failed or was cancelled, so no candidate earned the status of a discovery.

Candidate sequences, biological interpretations and unpublished findings are excluded from this note. The publishable subject is the stop decision: intermediate survival did not override failure at the claim gate.

Passing an early screen does not make a candidate real

Public-data reanalysis produces plausible signals at many stages. A read mapping to a reference or a candidate surviving de novo assembly can justify another check. Neither event establishes biological reality, novelty or a complete sequence.

Intermediate objects were therefore kept as candidates awaiting disposition, not counted as discoveries. Each gate was intended to remove a class of false positives, and the process required the final sequence decision to close before earlier passes could support a claim.

The last gate set the level of the claim

The required final sequence evidence was not obtained, or the run intended to obtain it was cancelled. The exact terminal state and failure log still need a direct re-audit before any public technical account. The canonical ledger supports only the decision not to proceed.

The inventory also notes that public CI history may exist, but this review did not directly verify the relevant run or repository licence. It is not counted here as external reproduction.

The important fact was not how many filters a candidate survived. It was that the candidate never cleared the filter that authorized a biological claim.

A legitimate restart would begin with the failed run

Reopening the work would first require a frozen account of the final run, its failure mode, candidate disposition and reproducible inputs. Pipeline consistency on the same public data must be established before refining any biological narrative.

Independent reanalysis, biological confirmation and prior-record comparison would follow. Until those gates exist, “new virus,” “discovery” and “validated candidate” remain prohibited descriptions.

Project record

  • Period: 2026
  • Activity: public-transcriptome reanalysis, mapping and de novo checks, staged candidate disposition and final sequence gating
  • Internal evidence: the inventory records intermediate checks plus CI and candidate-disposition materials
  • External validation: no independent reproduction directly confirmed in this review
  • Final outcome: technical NO-GO after final-gate failure or cancellation; zero discoveries
  • Not established: exact terminal run state, biological meaning, novelty or independent confirmation
