Cerebrospinal fluid surrounds the brain and spinal cord. When researchers track material moving with that fluid, a stronger signal at the end of a route does not immediately reveal which part of the route changed. I developed a hypothesis that examines this problem in outflow around the olfactory nerves.
What an endpoint measurement leaves unresolved
Material must enter a route, pass through its intermediate segments and reach the measurement site. The signal at one location can also depend on retention and measurement timing. I needed to distinguish the change measured at the endpoint from the process that produced it.
I worked through the literature and repeatedly rebuilt the argument around segment-specific conditions rather than treating the route as a single passage. The manuscript and figures explore when increasing capacity in one segment might alter total transfer, and what the same change would mean if another segment were already limiting it.
Make “state-dependent” a testable question
Here, state is not an age category. It is an assumption about which part of the route limits transfer under specified observation conditions. Making that assumption also requires asking what should be measured in each segment and what alternative explanations could produce the same result.
I included observations that would require the explanation to change, rather than treating compatibility with an observation as validation. This work contributes no new experiment establishing a cerebrospinal-fluid transport mechanism or treatment effect. The detailed segment model and proposed experiments remain within the unpublished manuscript material.
An editorial decision on 4 September 2026 ended the hypothesis submission. On 5 September I stopped resubmitting the same hypothesis and retained the manuscript and preparation material as a starting point for further work, which needs quantitative validation or new experimental evidence.
